Types Of Institutions

All higher education institutions in the country are managed by the Malaysian Ministry of Education, whether private or public. The government subsidizes approximately 60 percent of Malaysian higher education and the remainder is accounted for by the private sector.

Colleges/Faculties

Malaysian colleges help students to be admitted to universities, either with preparatory courses for the selection process or with qualifications for to transfer to a degree program. University Colleges are independent institutions that do not have university status, but have the right to award bachelor’s degrees in the same degrees in the same way as universities. Courses are available in most areas of study.

University

Both public and private universities in Malaysia award a range of undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications. There are also eight satellite campuses of international universities established in the country by the United Kingdom, Ireland and Australia, and each of them academic degrees and unparalleled credit transfer options.

The Academic Year In Malaysia

The important dates of the academic year in Malaysia vary according to the institution.

Generally speaking, one can follow the example of University Technology Malaysia (UTM): the year is divided into two semesters; the first runs from September to mid-January and the second from February to August or mid-September. Final exams last three weeks at the end of each semester.

The System Of Education System Malaysia
The education system in Malaysia is different from the one that in Bangladesh, especially in higher education. Check here to learn more about the different diplomas and programs in the educational system.
Bachelor’s degrees in Malaysia typically last three to five years full-time. If you choose a Bachelor’s degree in a general area, such as Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS), it will take an average of three years to complete; but there is also the option, as in most countries with a holistic educational system, to choose a more specific degree area, called a major, for example, Bachelor of Arts in Marketing. There are also minors, which do not necessarily have to be related to the student’s major.
It is necessary to complete a certain quota of courses in the chosen area to be able to receive the title in your bachelor’s degree. Most courses at private institutions are taught in English, while at public universities bachelor’s degrees are primarily taught in Malaysian languages, except for studies in science and mathematics.
Some institutions also offer the option of pursuing a Bachelor’s degree “with honors”. The student who chooses an Honors course will have a busier curriculum and academic routine, but will complete the degree during the same amount of time as a regular undergraduate degree. Honors students usually also need to do a research paper in their final year. At the end of the course academic qualification is awarded with the title “(Hons)” indicating the student’s dedication and high academic standard during their studies. If you are interested in a Bachelor’s degree with Honors, you should apply separately for the program.
Admission requirements for specific graduate courses differ widely according to the level of studies and the institution, and should be checked directly with the university. However, in general, the courses will require applicants to have at least a recognized bachelor’s degree.
The study programs are offered as Master’s and doctorates and consist of lectures, a research project and a thesis. Most graduate programs in the country are didactic – that is, they consist classes – and has a structure similar to those offered in the UK and Germany.
The students will attend lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops; and complete assignments in the same format as undergraduate degrees.
Malaysian master’s degrees last between one and five full-time years, depending on the academic credit requirements.
PhDs can take up to four years. The vast majority of graduate degrees available at all institutions are taught in English.

What is the best way to apply to a university in Malaysia? Check out our guide with tips and information on where and how to apply.

With a growing education sector, an unparalleled student scene, and an enviable climate Malaysia is an excellent choice of study destination for international students – not to mention the relatively low cost of living and tuition fees in the country. However, despite Malaysia’s reputation for being welcoming to students, it is important to know the selection process and make the best decision when it comes to choosing your institution.

Search

As in all countries and in all aspects of the study abroad experience, it is necessary to be as prepared as possible and start planning in advance. Students should familiarize themselves with the Malaysian education system and decide on the type of institution they would like to study at. The Malaysian institutions also offer a range of internationally recognized academic courses called twinning, a recommended option for international students. Ideally, you should begin your search one academic year in advance of the start date of classes in Malaysia. Most universities provide handouts and online catalogs with information about the courses and the process for students to download for free and check if they are eligible to enroll. Getting the right information before applying helps avoid mistakes such as completing a bachelor’s degree in Malaysia and finding out that it is not valid in Bangladesh.

It is always advisable to download the university catalogs available on the official sites of the institutions. International students can apply directly through the Malaysian university, but first they should check if the institution has the correct accreditation status by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).

Selection

Selection dates vary according to institutions, levels and areas of study. The main selections for both undergraduate and graduate programs take place in late February for the first semester and in July for the second semester.

Many institutions usually have a second or third selection period, or smaller processes for special courses during the year. For example Monash University Malaysia has a short single selection period in October for special enrollment students. Generally speaking, the application period in Malaysia lasts between two and three months, and classes start at the beginning of the of the next academic year.

For example, in 2017/2018, international students who enrolled at the University of Nottingham Malaysia had between September 1 2017 and January 15, 2018 to submit the application and start their course in the 2018 Malaysian academic year. Some universities have separate application processes for international students, including specific deadlines. Therefore, it is very important to confirm the relevant dates directly with your Malaysian university.

Essential Documents

Admission requirements vary between courses and universities, but generally include: certified copies of your passport and your ID, for example, your driver’s license; a recent passport-size photo passport size; a report on your health completed and signed by your physician; and proof of payment of application fees.

And, of course, a fully completed application form. Depending on your course, you will also need an English proficiency test result. IELTS result is valid for three years from the date of completion.

Applicants to postgraduate courses may need to submit a research proposal or thesis. Typically, the university takes between five and seven days to evaluate your application after the deadline. You receive a “Vacancy Offer” letter announcing your admission, with all the information about the enrollment and important dates. This letter will be one of the essential documents to get your Malaysian student visa at the Malaysian Immigration Department.

As there is no centralized application registration service for international students in Malaysia, you can apply online directly through the website.

 Application Tips

Thousands of international students apply and are admitted to Malaysian universities every year. If you browse through the institutions’ websites, student forums, and publications, you will find a variety of guides to the selection process in the country. Student Accommodations In Malaysia

With a low cost of living and enviable climate, Malaysia has become an increasingly popular study destination for students from all over the world. But between passing the selection process and the immigration requirements, you will also need to secure a place to live in the country during your studies.

Let us help you with that!

On-Campus

Most Malaysian universities offer some form of on-campus accommodation for foreign students. At Malaysia, this type of accommodation varies more than in countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom. The options on-campus can be in the form of residence halls or student hostels, each with a different range of facilities and prices.

All universities that welcome foreigners have an international admissions office available to help find accommodation and adjust to student life in Malaysia.

Residential Halls

Where residential halls are offered, they are often popular with international students because

they are almost always located in the center of campus life. Some halls are only a few minutes’ walk from the academic buildings, almost never much farther than that.

Hostels

Student hostels are the most common type of student housing in Malaysia. With communal facilities and living areas, living in a student hostel is almost like living in a university house shared with other students or even in an academic dormitory. In some cases, students will have to share a room or have a private room with communal areas.

Off Campus

It is also common for both international and local students to live in off-campus housing in Malaysia. Designed as student communities, most areas of this accommodation are located near the university buildings and can be shared houses, apartments or shared studio apartments, usually with three or four bedrooms, a living room and communal facilities. As with on-campus accommodation, students must apply for a place directly with the Malaysian university.

Student Agencies And Rentals Particular

There are also a number of real estate agencies that specialize in student housing. Many Malaysian university admissions offices will be able to help you get in touch with these agencies, especially those that are reliable. As in many local real estate markets, the properties and prices available vary widely depending on your budget and where you intend to live. On average, the monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the city center costs approximately RM 1,530 which is around 400 USD. While some agencies allow you to make accommodation arrangements before you travel to Malaysia, students who prefer to rent a private property will close the deal when they land in the country. It is also important to have a plan B, and perhaps arrange your stay in a hostel until you have all the details settled.

The Cost Of Living In Malaysia Is Considerably Low

Malaysia’s affordable tuition fees are a major factor of attraction for international students. Pre-university programs cost between USD 2,290 and $3,230 per year. Bachelor’s programs vary in price depending on the type of institution and program. Private universities generally offer more affordable degrees, while at branch universities can be much more expensive. For example, a degree in business can cost anywhere from 8,570 to 11,430 USD at a local university and up to 24,000 USD at a foreign university branch.

The cost of living in Malaysia is considerably low, with accommodation, both on and off campus, very affordable. Depending on location and level, the average monthly rent for a double room dormitory is between USD 86 and USD 129 per student. Other essential expenses such as food and transportation can cost between USD 200 and USD 270 per month.

The average cost of living for a student in Malaysia is between USD 3,430 and 4,860 (RM 12,000 – RM 17,000) per year, resulting in a reasonable amount compared to a student’s expenses in Australia, where these average is of USD 16,430.

Financing Your Studies

International students can work part-time (20 hours per week during school vacations or breaks of more than 7 days) while studying full-time in Malaysia, subject to immigration requirements. Allowances vary and foreign students may apply for a scholarship. It is always a good idea to check the institution’s website for a complete list of the scholarship opportunities they offer.
